Love to Love You, Baby: ETA Gordie McNeil

Introduction

From “Reflection of the Collingwood Elvis Festival, 2018”: I have seen Gordie perform in shows this past year, but Collingwood is the first time I have seen him in competition.  This year is his eighth year performing at the Festival.  He recently finished first in the Senior Open division at the Rock and Roll Remembered competition in Oshawa.  Gordie dedicated “Any Way You Want Me” to his wife, Lynn, who was celebrating her birthday. Congratulations on winning first place at the Oshawa competition, Gordie!

From “Recap and Photos of Saturday Night’s “Valentines with the Legends” Show”, posted February 18, 2018: ETA Gord McNeil sang early Elvis in his first set, and later performed songs from the '70s wearing a light blue jumpsuit.  Gord, in his seventh year as an ETA, and third place winner at Collingwood, Non-Pro Division, interacted with the audience by giving out teddy bears and scarves and serenading his wife, Lynn, while dancing with her, and then fan, Tammy, which delighted the ladies.

Featuring Gordie today has special meaning because he is the last ETA in a series of 28 posts (representing 28 days in February for Heart and Stroke month, 2 per day since Valentine’s Day, February 14th) on the topic of love.  Also, tonight, Monday, February 28th, at 8 p.m. Gordie will be celebrating his 70th evening of podcasts that he, along with his wife, Lynn, has offered for free during some very trying months of the pandemic.  With his wonderful renditions of Elvis songs covering all three decades, his friendly banter with viewers and amusing communication with Lynn, Gordie has brought so much joy to Elvis fans.  With such kind and loving hearts, they both honour the memory of Elvis in the best possible way—giving unselfishly to others. From all of us, thank you, Gordie and Lynn. And thank you, Gordie, for answering questions on relationships that are important to you.

Q.  Who are the important women in your life?

 A.  The most important women in my life are my mother who instilled in me the values to become who I am today, and of course my wife, Lynn, who has always been by my side and supported me for 47 years.

 Q.  What men have had a positive influence in your life and in what ways?

 A.  The two men who have had a very positive influence in my life are my father who taught me responsibility and encouraged me to pursue my passion for music.  Elvis was also a positive influence in my life through his movies and music.

 Q.  What would you like to say to your ETA fans?

 A.  I would like to thank my ETA fans for supporting me from day one when I first stepped on stage as an ETA until now.  Thank you also for helping me to keep "Elvis" alive.

Love is in the Air #25

Love Story: ETA Chris Collins

Q.  Who are the important women in your life?

A.  My aunt and my grandmother are very special ladies, both. When my mother passed away, they both stepped up to help me dad raise me and they're both equally responsible for helping me become the person I am today. They've both been through battles that I hope I never have to face in life, but rather than letting those battles put lines on their face, they let them build inside of them a strength and courage unmatched by any other. My girlfriend, I can never say enough. My girlfriend has been there through some of the worst parts of my life, and I through hers. She is kept me grounded and kept me persevering when I doubted myself the most. I couldn’t ask for a better partner to share life with.

Q.  What men have had a positive influence on your life, and in what ways?

A.  My Papa Don was the most incredible man I have ever met.  He was the absolute definition of someone who walked by faith every day, and he showed me how to do that.  I rarely ever, in the 23 years that I knew him, ever saw him get angry.  He never seemed to waste his energy on the facets of life which he could not control, instead giving it to God and letting it be.  My dad, talk about personal growth…when my mother passed away, it really took a lot out of him, and for several years.  Flash forward to last year when he started his singing career as a Neil Diamond tribute artist at Elvis Week.  I learned from him that, no matter how lost you are, if you keep on, you'll eventually find your way back.

Q.  Who are the people in your life that you would like to thank?  Why?

ETAs Ben King and Chris Collins in a photo by Jordan Poole.

A.  I'd have to thank God, first of all.  My life has been fraught with tragedy, but He surrounded me with good, strong, loving people.  My dad, for being my friend when I needed it, and the hand of discipline when I needed it, and teaching me how to know the difference, and even though she hasn't been with me for a while, I have to thank my mother; oh, and both of my grandmothers, one of whom is still around, for teaching me what unconditional love really is.  There's just so many.

Q.  What would you like to say to your ETA fans?

A.  “Friends,” as Elvis said, "May God bless you as He has blessed me."  I had a conversation with a fan once who was telling me about her relationship problems and I said to her, don't ever settle for less than what you're worth, which is a million dollars. And I don't mean that in just relationships, I mean that in every area of your life.  To close, if no one has told you they love you today, I love you, and I'll see you all very soon.

#23 Love is in the Air, Again: Collingwood 2015

February 24, 2022 Carolyn MacArthur

Collingwood, July 26, 2015. ETA Bruce Stewart is captured by photographer Chris Helgren for REUTERS

I came across these great photos taken by photographer Chris Helgren for REUTERS at the 2015 Collingwood Elvis Festival. Probably many of you were there in 2015 and may even remember seeing these photos. If so, please enjoy them for a second time. For me, they were a priceless find. SIDEBURNS Magazine did not launch until 2017 and I did not attend the Collingwood Elvis Festival until 2018. And as we all know, Collingwood held its last Elvis Festival in 2019, making any early photos of the popular festival even more special. Many of the people in the photos I have met over the past few years, but there are a couple of ETAs in the photos who are new to me.

In the following photos (top to bottom) are: 1) Brad Mitchell 2) Dave Stewart 3) Gordie McNeil 4) Joey Cundari 5) Lorenz Francke 6) Marcus Wells and Wendy King 7) Norm Ackland Jr. and Jax 8) Dan Barrella 9) Richard Wolfe 10) Norm Ackland Sr. and his Elvis jewelry. C.M.
