ETA Anthony Von’s performance last night at Elements/Flamboro was electrifying. Perhaps it was the presence of the ladies at the front table, who are fans and friends, and whom Anthony dubbed the “Jordanettes”, or maybe it was the unusually large crowd of people, many of whom dropped by the lounge to watch Anthony perform after hearing his powerful voice over the PA system, but last night’s performance ranks as one the best ETA performances we have seen at Elements/Flamboro this year.
Anthony seemed extremely comfortable on the small stage. He joked with the audience, and had a great time conversing with 84 year old Joan from Stoney Creek, whom he called the Green Lady (a take on the Green Lantern) because of her green suit. Joan hit the floor dancing to Anthony’s first song, and danced every fast song until her departure after the second set. Joan told me that Anthony has the best Elvis voice she has ever heard…quite an endorsement from someone who has heard a lot of Elvis songs over the years.
Pat Spring bought along a beautiful poster of Anthony from 1999 that shows Anthony posing beside a pink Cadillac. Pat and his wife have been fans of Anthony since they first saw him at the beginning of his career at Collingwood. Pat shared some stories of the early days which I enjoyed hearing, having just met Anthony this year for the first time at Casino Niagara.
Anthony encouraged us all to sing backup during many of the songs, including perennial fan favourites, “Sweet Caroline” and “Stop, Look, and Listen”. We also joined Anthony in singing "Happy Birthday" to Marie. Unfortunately, Marie had to leave before Anthony had a chance to sing "Marie's The Name"...next year, maybe?
It was a great evening of entertainment for all who attended. Anthony will be returning on June 29th to Elements/Flamboro for what is sure to be another fantastic show. Audience members provided Anthony with a list of songs which he promised he will sing at his next appearance. Hope to see you all there!
There is a lot of confusion about the future of Friday and Saturday shows at Elements casinos. Word has it that the stage in the lounge area of Elements/Flamboro will be disassembled before ETA Matt Cage’s show next Friday, June 22nd. They have already removed the black curtain that acted as a backdrop for the performers. Matt is scheduled for next Friday, but no one is really sure where we will find him. It is rumoured that the lounge area is making way for a slew of slot machines; but then I also heard that is where they will put the gaming tables in the area. I was also told the gaming tables may be upstairs. What I believe may be true, for now, is that the shows will cease as of June 30th and will probably pick up again in October. I, for one, will miss the Friday night shows. If anyone knows anything contrary to these reports, please let me know. I will post updates when I have concrete information. Just a thought: maybe we should start a petition expressing our wish for management to continue booking performers—especially ETAs, at all Elements casinos. Until next time, cheers! Carolyn.
Update: July 18th, 2018
I was concerned about the future of our Friday night shows at Elements/Flamboro, so I dropped by the casino this past Saturday on my way to the RHLI show to see if I could get more information from someone in the know. I spoke twice to someone in management (who requested that I do not publish her name) to make sure the information I heard the first time was correct. Sadly, as of July 1st, 2018, Elements/Flamboro will not be booking any entertainment for Friday and Saturday nights. I asked if this might change in the future, to which she replied, "Not in the foreseeable future." She said she could not comment on the status of shows at the other Elements casinos: Mohawk, Brantford, Woodbine. I will investigate to see what I can find out about Mohawk and Brantford, the two casinos closest to Flamboro.
I hope to see you all at Elements/Flamboro on Friday, July 22nd for ETA Matt Cage's show, and on Friday, July 29th for ETA Anthony Von's return engagement. Maybe if management sees a large number of patrons at these last two ETA shows having a great time, they will reverse their decision for the sake of community spirit...at least we can hope.
For those who are able to travel to Niagara Falls on Wednesday afternoons, Casino Niagara often features ETAs in their Silver Aces shows held at 3pm and 6pm. ETA Matt Cage will be performing on Wednesday, July 18th, 2018. See you there! Cheers! Carolyn
